Thoughts from Florida

Was just in Lee County attending to family business and now this! Family lived thru Charley in 2004, but barely by having their mobile home roof blown off while they were in it. Now other family, who also live in a mobile home, are in the currently predicted direct path. Thankfully they were taken in by a family friend in the area who have a better built house, but am still praying for everyone's safety!

I'm in Palm Beach county. Survived Frances, Jeanne, and Wilma.

The fact that just about every inch of Florida will be affected by this storm is mind-boggling.

Everybody, please hunker down and stay safe. If you're told to evacuate, do it. Otherwise, stay put and stay calm.

Looking forward to "seeing" everybody after this is all over.

Just checking in !! I have done all I can do, now it's just sit and wait !! My house was built in 1954, and I have lived in it since 1971, so it has seen it's share of Hurricanes !! The unknowns are Tornadoes and Electricity ??? I have kept up with the CC's so far, but the rest will depend on the Power !! I went thru Charlie, Frances, and Jeanne !! I lost Power for 10 days between the 3 of them !!! My Daughter lives in Kissimmee, and their house didn't survive, but they all were okay !!!
Praying we are all lucky this time around,
Betslou41

All my thoughts continue to watch over and pray for you.
A suggestion as you may be affected badly if you have not already done so: back up all your computer data in case the power suddenly goes off (external hard drive or Cloud?) and keep all your equipment above the ground floor

Florida Keys & Everglades/southern Florida are now getting rain bands, but the storm is still sitting on Cuba. For over 24 hours they've been getting hammered, & now the storm has strengthened again. Poor Cuba! It's like a giant grinding wheel on them that just isn't going away. I wonder what will be left when Irma finally does move on.

And Jose is getting ready to slam Puerto Rico again. They've already been tremendously damaged.

Take care everyone, stay safe.

Thank you so much for checking in, Betslou41. It means more than I can say to hear from everyone in Irma's path.

Just heard on the Weather Channel that the name IRMA will more than likely be retired for use in the future. Hurricane names are retired if they are as bad as Irma.

I just looked up the meaning of the name IRMA. It is of German origin and means "universal or complete". I am trying not to take the ominous interpretation of the name as applied to this hurricane...but it's hard not to.

PLEASE STAY SAFE, PLEASE REACH OUT IF YOU ARE IN IRMA'S PATH WHEN IT IS SAFE TO DO SO.

I grew up and lived in South Florida for over 50 years. We survived many hurricanes from Donna in 1960, Andrew in 1992, and Wilma, just to name a few. We moved to NC five years ago, but still have friends and family in Florida. Knowing the terrors and the damage a hurricane can inflict we are feeling like we are there with our family, at least in our hearts. Please be safe. My thoughts and prayers are for everyone. I've heard even here in western North Carolina we'll be feeling some of the effects of Irma but, thankfully, nothing like we would if we still lived there.

God bless everyone!

Has there been any word on extending the Challenge for those of us about to lose power & internet service for an unknown amount of days here in Florida?

Amazingly we still have power in Englewood, FL west coast just above Naples, which the eye will pass through around 2 pm, Tampa maybe 10 pm. It is now 10:50 am and bracing for the worst that is yet to come. Xfinity has extended their wifi hotspots so we may be able to keep updated once we lose power.

Hoping for more good news updates in defiance of Irma.

I suggested that on a different thread yesterday. Seems like it could be done since the fall event is a few weeks away..just a matter of changing the end date. Hope the powers that be read this.

Eyewall and perhaps eye are about two hours away from Cape Coral. Starting to lose power in the area.

Just heard that 2 law enforcement officers in Hardee County were killed in a car crash as they went home to pick up personal items before heading to a shelter.

Watching carefully to see if we'll need to move from Ocala as the storm track is now heading that way and may still be a cat3 when it hits.

My sister and I have been glued to MSNNBC here since this started , she has two friends in the direct path of IRMA and I have several friends on here in MC.
I hate feeling so helpless watching this monster storm and what it is doing and if that is not enough two more right on her heels.
My sister and I send you prayers and please please be safe property can be rebuilt as hard as it is to lose a home but dear friends your life and those of your pets are far more important to us.
